Is man a biological being with certain functions?
What Aristotle said?
Aristotle is considered to be one of the
greatest Greek philosopher in the history of mankind. He was born in 384BCE
and died in 322BCE .He was the student of Plato.
One of the great contribution he made is about
the functions of human beings. According to him, man is a biological being who
has certain functions. These functions are:
·
Eating
·
Perceiving,
·
Having children or reproduce,
·
Thinking, and
·
Doing things.
Aristotle called
these functions as the characteristics of living organisms. Talking about the
function of eating, a man eats to fulfill his need for food and bodily
nourishment so he can grow and survive. The function of perception is to
perceive the external stimulus and give responses accordingly. Man also has the
characteristic of reproduction, which helps him to reproduce and extend
its species. Thinking is the highest level of function which exists in
higher forms of living beings only i.e. humans. Humans have the ability to use
their mind to think, examine and analyze things and events around them. This
ability helps them in understanding of the world. Through this function, human
beings gain knowledge. Doing things is another function of human
beings according to Aristotle. It means that a human perform certain things and
activities throughout their life which could be anything e.g. looking at a
picture, cooking a meal or reading a book.
What do you think about that? Is it true? Does it really happens?
